A new asthma vaccine from France

French scientists have been working on a new vaccine that may in the future help to prevent the symptoms of allergic asthma.

So far research has been carried out using mice, but the results are promising and now scientists are planning to develop the vaccine to be tested on humans.

With an estimated 300 million people worldwide suffering from the disease, the idea of using a vaccine could potentially change the lives of millions.

Pollution linked to anxiety and depression in our children

Pregnant moms exposed to high levels of pollution are at increased risk of their children developing behavioral problems by the age of 6 or 7, a new study suggests.

Researchers from Colombia University measured the levels of pollution in the blood of 253 nonsmoking moms to be from inner city areas.

They found that those with high levels of a toxin known as PAH were 23% more likely to have children that would later suffer from anxiety, depression and attention problems.

We have known for some time that exposure to pollution is damaging to our health but to know that the health of our unborn children is also at risk is alarming news.

Doctors may be able to predict asthma from birth

According to new research from Denmark, doctors may be able to predict asthma in children from the time they are born.

They found that 40% of children with asthma by the age of 7 years, had shown signs of breathing difficulties at birth, with the remaining 60% of children developing problems in early childhood.

This is exciting news as researchers believe new treatments for asthma should focus on preventing the disease in the very early stages of life and perhaps even before birth.

The effects of long term pollution on the over 65's

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health have been measuring the effects of long term pollution on our health.

Senior author Joel Schwartz believes air pollution is one of the largest avoidable causes of death and illness in the United States.

His research shows how long term exposure to pollution increases the risk of being hospitalized for lung and heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Electrical currents may be the new asthma treatment

A new clinical trial is under way to measure the effects of using electricity as new way to treat asthma.

The trial which is taking place across the country, involves holding an electrical device to the neck for 90 seconds. Low level electrical signals will then stimulate the nerves in the neck, helping to relax the muscles and make breathing easier.

This new treatment may be particularly helpful to sufferers who do not respond well to current medication.

TO: Distributors, Retailers and Sellers of Our Air Cleaners

RE: NEW REGULATION FOR INDOOR AIR CLEANERS SOLD IN THE

STATE OF CALIFORNIA, USA.

This letter is to inform you that, as of October 18, 2010, any portable air cleaning device offered for sale in California must be certified by the California Air Resources Board (ARB) as emitting no more than 0.050 parts per million of ozone. As explained below, certain labeling requirements also apply (however, the deadline for meeting labeling requirements has been extended, as indicated below). We plan to continue selling our air cleaners in California and will provide you with complying, certified products.

The regulation is the result of a new state law and concern about persons being exposed to ozone, a harmful air pollutant. The ARB regulation applies to any person who manufactures, sells, supplies, offers for sale, or introduces into commerce in California any indoor air cleaning device used or intended for use in occupied spaces. As a manufacturer or company that sells or supplies air cleaning devices, we are required to inform all of our known distributors, retailers and sellers about the regulation. A copy of the complete regulation is enclosed for your information; it also is available at http://www.arb.ca.gov/research/indoor/aircleaners/final_regulation_order_comp....

In summary, portable air cleaners used or intended for use in occupied spaces must be: (1) tested by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory for ozone emissions and electrical safety under ANSI/UL Standard 867 (or, for "mechanical filtration only" devices, tested for electrical safety under ANSI/UL Standard 507); (2) certified by ARB; and (3) labeled on the product packaging. Labels for non-medical devices (those for which no health claims are made) must read: "This air cleaner complies with the federal ozone emissions limit. ARB certified." Medical devices (those for which health claims are made) must use labeling required by the federal Food and Drug Administration, and include "ARB certified" in the label.

At its December 2009 meeting, the ARB approved amendments to extend the labeling deadline to October 18, 2011 and to allow the use of adhesive certification labels (rather than printing on the package) until October 1, 2012. These amendments have received final State approval and became effective on October 9, 2010. The current labeling requirements are found in Sections 94801(a)(16) and 94806 of the revised Final Regulation Order (at http://www.arb.ca.gov/research/indoor/aircleaners/final_regulation_order_comp.... Please note that these include specifications regarding the size, content, and placement of the label indicating the devices' compliance with the regulation on the devices' packaging.

More than just romance in the air this month

As Valentine's Day approaches, candlelit dinners and open fires spring to mind. But according to the experts, snuggling up in front of a roaring fire may not be such a good idea.

Wood smoke contains harmful pollutants, such as soot and carbon monoxide, as well as toxins such as dioxin, which have been linked to increased cancer rates in adults.

So if you are planning a romantic night for two in front of a log fire, you may want to think twice.

Bad news for cat lovers

According to a new study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, owning a cat as an adult can increase your chances of developing allergies if you already suffer from asthma.

6000 people were monitored over a 9 year period. The group that went on to own a cat in that time were much more likely to develop allergies, and particularly if the animals were allowed into the bedroom. However, owning a cat as a child has the opposite effect as it can drastically reduce the chances of developing allergies.

So if you do find yourself becoming allergic to your beloved feline friend, what do you do ? According to the experts, if finding another home for the animal isn't possible, don't let them into your bedroom, in fact if possible keep them outdoors as much as you can, get yourself a HEPA air cleaner and finally wash them once a week, good luck with that last one !!

The dangers of second hand smoke

Starting to slide when it comes to your New Years resolutions?

For those of you who have given up smoking, the latest findings published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology may help to keep you motivated.

The new study shows that adults with aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease are three times more likely to have been exposed to second hand smoke as a child. The disease is common among asthmatics and those suffering from chronic sinus inflammation and prevents sufferers from taking aspirin.

So next time that craving hits you, remember, giving up will not only save your life but possibly change the lives of your children too.

D
ifferent types of asthma

In a study sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, researchers found evidence to suggest that there are actually different types of asthma.

6000 patients were monitored and samples of mucus were tested for the presence of particular types of white blood cell, eosinophils, known to cause airway inflammation in asthmatics.

Remarkably nearly half the patients did not have eosinophils present, proving that there are other causes of airway inflammation and asthma attacks.

Furthermore the 'non-eosinophils' patients did not respond well to treatment using oral and inhaled corticosteroids.

Experts believe these new findings will go a long way in helping us to understand why certain asthma medications don't work and hopefully be key in finding new ways to effectively treat certain types of asthma.

New ways to treat COPD

Why is it that the smokers disease COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is so difficult to treat, even after the patient has given up smoking ? New research from the team at Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School, may have found the answer.

High levels of a protein known as SAA were found in the lungs of the COPD patients, even after they had given up smoking. Further tests revealed that this protein was responsible for causing inflammation in the lungs and actually prevents the lung tissue from repairing.

Which would explain why the disease is so tricky to treat. Researchers are now exploring the possibility of creating a drug to switch off the effects of the protein and also include a synthetic healing agent, to increase the lungs chances of regeneration.

Babies born by Cesarean section at greater risk

In recent months we have seen evidence to suggest that babies born in

by Cesarean section are more likely to go on to develop allergies in later life.

However according to an article published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, there is further evidence to suggest that babies born by C section also have a greater chance of developing asthma as early as 3 years old. And even more remarkably, babies with no family history of asthma are at the greatest risk.

Hypertension and diabetes linked to pollution

Previous studies have shown a link between pollution and cardiovascular disease.

However new research from the Boston University claims there is also a link between pollution and diseases such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension, with Afro American women the most heavily affected.

Asthma meds linked to rare birth defects
Pregnant tummy

Some alarming news this month from an article published on line in the Pediatric journal. According to researchers, mums to be who take certain types of asthma medication 1 month prior to conception and up to 3 months into their pregnancy are at greater risk of having a child with certain types of birth defects.

The good news is that these cases are extremely rare and there has been no link found between more common birth defects and asthma meds.

The well-educated have more allergies

According to a new Canadian study, people with a good education are twice as likely to develop allergies.

The study, published in the Journal of Allergy, attempts to explain why, in recent years, there has been a huge increase in the number of people suffering from severe allergies to foods such as peanuts and shellfish.

Many scientists believe the hygiene hypothesis is in part to blame, as smaller families, better living conditions, increased use of antibiotics have all contributed to a weaker immune system in some people, leading to an increase in allergies.

A better education may be another reason, as educated people are more likely to heed their doctor's advice and delay giving their babies certain foods therefore increasing the risk of developing food allergies.

Researchers are not suggesting we expose ourselves to more bacteria, as that in itself brings its own risks. However these new findings may help us to further understand why allergies develop in some people and allow us to find ways to combat the growing problem.

Carpooling: Is it Worth It?

Earthdaykit-2011
Whether you are using concentrated green cleaners or carpooling to help the environment doesn't matter.  The important thing is that you are doing something.  The more the better.

Sustainable transport and carpooling:   Sustainable transport is the idea of replacing the current transport system with fuel-efficient, environmentally-friendly alternatives.  Walking and using hybrids or electric cars are some forms.  If one of these ideas is not feasible, try carpooling, which saves on gas and car maintenance, lowers emissions and saves money (which we all could use with gas prices the way they are today).  Ask your neighbors, friends and co-workers to create a carpool schedule.  Plus, you can meet new people and catch up with others on the way to work.

Also, If you'd like to take advantage of the best concentrated, green cleaners plus receive a FREE discount membership with no hassles:  Go Green & Save Your Green (money that is), contact us at HealthandHarmony@comcast.net for your $30 (typically about $40 with shipping, handling, and tax)  green cleaning basket plus FREE membership.  Hurry though, because the offer expires May 20, 2011.

Attention FarmVille Fans:  Keep your eyes open because May 9th, 2011 you'll be able to get a virtual Green Cleaning kit for your farm too.
